Below are details from each game:

–West’s Josh Moore reneges on the Navy, wants to coach high school baseball
Written on 6 May 2008 by prepalertncMILLS RIVER - West Henderson’s Josh Moore had signed to play baseball at the Naval Academy, but has reneged on the decision to pursue another school because of his desire to become a teacher and to coach high school baseball.
Moore made the decision to pull out of the Naval Academy because of the 5-year commitment of military service after his four years at the Academy. He feels that with the extra five years, he dream of being a coach would have passed him by.
He has had some interest from East Carolina, Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville.
–Enka wins second straight MAC baseball tournament over Roberson
Written on 6 May 2008 by prepalertncSKYLAND - With Roberson hosting the MAC baseball tournament, one would think that the Rams would have the biggest advantage playing on their own field, but the Enka Jets used a nine run fourth inning, including two home runs, to blow open a 5-2 lead and the Jets cruised to 14-2 win over Roberson in the finals of the MAC baseball tournament.
Enka also won last year’s tournament against the Rams in Franklin.
Roberson was down 5-0 in the top of the fourth, but scored two runs to pull within three. But the Jets came out with the bats-a-blazing in the bottom of the inning. Kramer Clark and Cody Jones both hit homers, with Clark’s three-run blast and Jones’ grand slam highlighting the nine run inning.

–Cindi Simmons, Thomas Evaul win NCHSAA Toby Webb Award as “Coach of the Year”
Written on 2 May 2008 by prepalertncCHAPEL HILL - Cindi Simmons of Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva and Thomas Evaul of Avery County High School are the recipients of
the third annual Toby Webb Coach of the Year Award given by the NCHSAA.
The two outstanding coaches were recognized at the NCHSAA’s Annual Meeting last night (May 1) at the Smith Center on the campus of the
University of North Carolina.
The Webb Award is made possible through the generosity of gifts from individuals and companies through the NCHSAA Endowment and annually recognizes an outstanding male and female coach. To be eligible for the award, a coach must be nominated by school personnel at the NCHSAA
member school where he or she coaches, to have coached for a minimum of 10 years, and have made major contributions to the success of high school athletics at the school, in the community and beyond.
Simmons has coached women¹s basketball for 25 seasons and volleyball for 21, all at Sylva-Webster or at Smoky Mountain, and has been highly successful in both. She has won three state titles and 11 conference championships in volleyball, and her 2007 basketball team won the state
championship to go with seven league titles in that sport. She has an outstanding overall record of 453-218 as a basketball head coach.
She was president of the North Carolina Coaches Association in 2005-06, the first woman to hold that position, and has won numerous Coach of the Year honors in both sports. A graduate of Hayesville High School and Western Carolina University, Simmons is in the WCU Athletic Hall of Fame and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She has also started community outreach programs such as "Reading with the Lady Mustangs," a program that sends her basketball players into the elementary school classrooms.
Thomas Evaul has been a head coach in wrestling, tennis and soccer during his career, with over 20 years as a head soccer coach at Avery County. He helped initiate both the men’s and women’s soccer programs as well as tennis at his school. He also served as Avery’s athletic director for eight years and coached in the North Carolina Coaches’ Association East-West all-star soccer game in 2003.
Evaul, who also teaches Spanish, has provided translation services in his county for civic organizations, hospitals and the sheriff’’s department, among others, and has been involved with recreation department sports in the county. He has also served as the faculty sponsor for student
government at Avery.
The award is in honor of Toby Webb, a member of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame who was an outstanding coach as well as a principal and superintendent. He helped turn Albemarle into a football power and posted a brilliant 103-18-6 mark as a head coach there.
–Charlie Adams from NCHSAA releases statement on Friday night college football TV
Written on 2 May 2008 by prepalertncCHAPEL HILL After receiving several inquiries about some recent developments relative to universities playing televised football games on Friday night, Charlie Adams, executive director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, has issued the following statement:
"There has been no change in the position of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and its concern about televising college football games on Friday night. We do not support any college or university televising a football game in the traditional Friday night high school football slot.
However, in the situation with the recently announced Appalachian State-Wofford game for Halloween night on ESPN2, we are appreciative of the fact that Appalachian State informed us early enough that there is plenty of time to let member schools know. That way our schools can make adjustments or move games as they see fit."
But we want to emphasize that we hope that this is not the beginning of a consistent pattern of games being played and televised in North Carolina on the primary night that high school teams play, because we believe that could really damage our programs."
